Teaching Critical Media Consumption

(Media Literacy)

In the modern era, mass media have become society's main source of information. Most citizens shape their worldview, their opinions and even their identity based on contents that appear in media including newspapers, television, radio and the Internet. It is important to understand how media shape our perspectives in order to learn skills for more critical media consumption—skills that are essential for any citizen, and for citizens of Israel in particular.

Israeli society includes many minority groups and Israel is embroiled in an ongoing violent conflict that has lasted several decades. This reality intensifies the media's influence over public opinion. The abundance of social divisions and the fragility of democracy in Israel serve to increase the need to impart skills for critical consumption of media.
